MEPC addresses environmental issues under IMO’s remit, including the conventions associated with the MEPSEAS project.

As MEPC covers a range of environmental issues such as tackling control and prevention of ship-source pollution covered by the MARPOL treaty, garbage from ships, ballast water management and anti-fouling systems, amoung others, the committee were presented with several updates including:

  • identification and recruitment of an international consultant to provide technical oversight and coordination;
  • establishment of National Task Forces (NTF) in all seven countries and completion of the first round of NTF meetings;
  • development of a MEPSEAS project training strategy, in consultation with the countries and taking into consideration the MEPSEAS project training needs;
  • identification and nomination of national training institutes in six of the seven countries who will assist with the delivery of national training activities;
  • identification and nomination of local training experts who will join the international training experts to deliver national training;
  • identification and recruitment of four international subject matter experts who, in consultation with the national training experts and consultants, will develop the relevant training packages pertaining to the conventions identified under the MEPSEAS Project and deliver a regional Train-The-Trainers workshop to build capacity within the countries to draft internal rules and regulations to facilitate implementation and enforcement;
  • participation and showcasing of MEPSEAS project in the PEMSEA East Asia Seas Congress held in Philippines; and
  • significant progress towards finalizing a project website.
